NEW YORK (WABC) — Many hockey enthusiasts would put getting a picture with an NHL star on their bucket list. That fantasy may come true at the league’s new retail space at One Manhattan West.
At the very least, there’ll be augmented reality.
When the NHL relocated its corporate offices from midtown Manhattan’s 47th and Sixth Avenues to One Manhattan West, the NHL’s flagship shop relocated as well. The NHL Shop, which reopened on October 1, is a 9,000-square-foot facility two blocks from Madison Square Garden. The two-story shop is unlike anything else the NHL has done before. The shop was created as a “Fanatics experience,” and the firm also manages the league’s e-commerce. Lids, a sports shop owned in part by Fanatics, will run the business on a day-to-day basis.
One idea came from the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League. At AT&T Stadium in 2019, they added a “pose with the professionals” option. Fans stood in front of a video screen, chose five players from a menu, and then waited there watching as the players entered the frame and “posed” for a picture with them. Fans were then sent a digital version of the picture.

The NHL’s chief brand officer, Brian Jennings, told ESPN last week, “We had seen it when the Cowboys did it and were social media darlings.”
Players who were recorded in front of green screens during the players media tour in Chicago last week will appear in the NHL’s version of “pose with the pros.” As the season continues, the idea is to add more current players to the mix, as well as some past players.
The screen is one of the store’s 29 high-definition video walls, which will broadcast anything from live games to live tweets and Instagram postings from customers.
“The theme is out of date. When you do anything themed, it becomes antiquated very quickly. However, experiential learning is ageless. That’s one of the things I like about the shop “According to Jennings. “Because we live in an age when the younger generation wants a customized experience, there was a lot of personalization.”
The shop will include the usual selection of goods, including jerseys, caps, and other memorabilia from all 32 NHL teams, with a focus on the local teams. Later this year, it will include additional products such as WEAR by Erin Andrews apparel and Funko figurines. But it’s the store’s technology and other advances that set it apart from the original midtown location. The following are some of the highlights:
Ice rink: Next to the shop is a two-acre public plaza, on which the NHL plans to build a 60-foot by 80-foot ice rink, similar to the one in Manhattan’s Bryant Park, during the winter months. It can be seen from the store’s second floor. Outdoor public skating will be available, as well as NHL-hosted activities.
“It’s just 60 by 80 inches and lacks the glass. We won’t be able to play a real hockey game, but if a team wants to come in and do a skating clinic, that’s something we can do “According to Jennings.
Customization: The new NHL Shop, like the old retail shop and most NHL venues, will be able to produce personalized jerseys on demand, complete with heat-pressed numbers and nameplates.
“However, jerseys are costly. I’m not going to sit here and tell you that’s an entry-level thing “According to Jennings. “Having the option to purchase a customized cap or a name and number T-shirt simply makes it more accessible.”
New York City’s NHL Shop provides completely customizable jerseys and T-shirts. NHL
The NHL Shop has brought personalization to a new level in this area. Buy a hat or bring your own, and the store will personalize it with a player’s autograph, jersey number, or even a captain’s “C” for a charge. For example, Carey Price’s autograph and number might be put to a Montreal Canadiens toque, or Sidney Crosby’s signature could be placed to the side of a Pittsburgh Penguins cap.
For years, fans debated which players deserved to have their names and numbers printed on officially sanctioned name and number T-shirts. At the NHL Store, you can pick out a blank shirt and have any club logo, as well as a player’s name and number, put on it.
“One of the greatest problems we have is that with manufacturers, we have these minimum orders of 288 pieces of anything,” Jennings said. “And sometimes you have that person on a second or third line who may be a fan favorite but not have the popularity to require a size range.” “With these kits, we’ll be able to promote our athletes more easily.”
Whether it’s an unexpected breakthrough player, a recent trade acquisition, or a last-minute goalie, the shop can quickly produce an official T-shirt featuring any of them.
Original Six sweaters are “frozen” in plastic in a rotating display at the Hockey Hall of Fame. NHL
As one ascends to the second level of the new shop, reproductions of Original Six jerseys are “frozen” in plastic, displaying hockey history. Jennings, on the other hand, didn’t want to convert the property into a museum. “Our past is significant to us. However, we didn’t want the shop to seem old or nostalgic “he said
Allowing the Hockey Hall of Fame to carve out a space on the second floor carried the danger of that happening, but Jennings said the goal is to make those display cases something lively, with changing collections throughout the year, basically a preview for what’s on show at the Hall in Toronto.
The initial installation will highlight the development of the hockey stick and helmet, as well as the history of the NHL All-Star Game and the Winter Olympics’ inclusion of hockey.
Goalie mask art: The shop will include a display of unique goalie masks made by some of the sport’s most well-known names, such as David Arrigo and David Gunnarsson. While some of the masks are inspired by NHL clubs, such as one honoring the Seattle Kraken’s expansion, others are inspired by New York City itself. One mask, in particular, has the logos of the Rangers, Islanders, and Devils all at once. The plan is to auction off the masks every now and again, and to have the artists come into the shop to make pieces in the future.
NHL Shop is having a soft opening this week, ahead of its formal launch on October 1. The public skating rink is scheduled to debut in November.
