After calling the resort “disgusting and filthy,” a mother claimed her family was forced to leave their week-long vacation at Pontins early.
Clare Abbott, of Horley, Surrey, claimed she ‘needs another vacation’ to recover after her trip to the Camber Sands resort in East Sussex, where her son tested positive for coronavirus.
The mother of four claimed she and her fiancé Ray Parks discovered a sharp nail poking through the couch bed, as well as pubic hairs surrounding the bathroom sink.
She said that the family paid £1,049 on a half-board vacation, but that they were compelled to spend additional money dining out since the restaurant had allegedly run out of several things.
‘We went to maintenance on Saturday and Sunday, and they kept promising to send someone up, but no one showed up,’ she added.
‘Eventually, the maintenance guys came up to us and said they didn’t have any couch beds, so one of them actually hammered the nail in place and covered it with gaffer tape.’
Because the bathroom door was too large for the frame and wouldn’t shut, Clare claimed the family “didn’t get to shower at all.”
‘The toilet is connected to the kitchen, so anybody in the kitchen can see whomever is on the toilet,’ she said.

‘So I went to reception and told them the toilet door wouldn’t close; they promised to send someone up from maintenance, but they never did.’ As a result, we didn’t have a chance to shower.’
In regards to her daughter’s mattress, she says a member of maintenance staff informed her “it wasn’t her job and she doesn’t deal with mattresses,” so they went out and purchased a duvet to cover it.
Clare said that they finally swapped rooms and discovered that the beds in the new room were identical.
Even the communal amenities, such as the restaurant and pool, were unappealing to her.
‘Everyone was continuously complaining, screaming, and being nasty, and the staff was getting a lot of grief,’ she said.

‘I couldn’t take the tension any longer, so we spent even more money on going out and eating to unwind.’ It was just disgusting and filthy.
‘Even the swimming pool was promoted as a beautiful pool with a slide.’
‘However, due to a shortage of personnel, we were only permitted to swim in half of the pool, with approximately 500 people in your face.’
‘I had to get out because I was so claustrophobic.’ You wouldn’t be able to go in there.’
Clare claimed her kid fell ill towards the end of the vacation and tested positive for Covid-19 when they returned home.

‘It’s not unexpected since there were so many people,’ she said. They were totally empty hand sanitizer bottles strewn around the area, and we were all packed in.
‘We simply wish we hadn’t gone on vacation in the first place – it’s completely wrecked us.’ I believe we need a vacation to get over it.’
She claimed she is still waiting for a response to her complaint and refund request almost three weeks after the holiday.
Pontins has been approached for comment by Metro.co.uk, but has yet to receive a response.
