The NHL season is in full swing, and the Montreal Canadiens have quickly become the top team to beat. The Habs currently hold a 14 point lead atop of their conference with an impressive record of 16-4-2 on home ice. With so many teams fighting for playoff position, this race will be anything but boring!

The “nba power rankings” is a website that ranks the National Basketball Association teams from best to worst. The site also provides a detailed explanation of each team’s performance.

In hockey, there are a variety of stresses. It’s sometimes there to entice a gamer to do more. Other times, pressure is a good indicator of what potential holds.

The NHL has moved on to the last month of the regular season. As the game progresses, we’ll be observing how one player from each team handles the increased pressure — good, terrible, or (maybe) ugly.

How we rank: A panel of ESPN hockey pundits, analysts, reporters, and editors rank teams against one another based on game results, injuries, and the upcoming schedule, and the results are collated to generate the list seen above.

Note: For each team, the previous rating relates to the most recent edition, which was released on March 30. The following are the point totals for Tuesday’s games.

Josh Manson is a player that is under pressure. Manson has only been in Colorado for a few weeks, but the prospective UFA has already said that he intends to stay. In such situation, Manson must continue to raise the stakes. For the Avs, the 31-year-old blueliner is a depth component, and every change must be significant. Colorado is on the verge of a Stanley Cup run, and Manson’s contributions will determine his future.

1617223581_324_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Previously ranked at 4 points, with a percentage of 0.743. against. BUF (Apr. 8), @ NSH (Apr. 9), vs. ANA (Apr. 10). (Apr. 12)

Ben Chiarot is the player who is under pressure. I promise it’s not all about the new guys. Florida swung hard on the Chiarot deal, whether you like it or not, and both parties need a solid return. Chiarot, a prospective unrestricted free agent, is competing for a new deal, and with Aaron Ekblad out, Florida is banking on the newcomer to cover in the voids now and into the playoffs. Expectations and opportunities are high.

1617223576_765_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Previously ranked: 2 points, 0.700 percentile against. BUF (Apr. 7), vs. NYI (Apr. 8), vs. ANA (Apr. 10) and At NYR (Apr. 10). (Apr. 12)

Max Domi is a player that is under a lot of strain. Carolina’s forward depth is impacted by the departure of Jesperi Kotkaniemi, who was employed both at center and on the wing. Domi, who came here from Columbus in a trade, has worked his way up to a decent position. Can Domi build on it now, with free agency coming, and show that he can be a top-echelon, top-nine skater every night?

1617223599_538_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Previous position: 3 points, 0.659 percentile Next seven days: vs. SEA (Apr. 9), @ ANA (Apr. 6), @ SJ (Apr. 7), @ SEA (Apr. 8) (Apr. 12)

Ryan Carpenter is a player that is under pressure. Sean Monahan’s season was cut short due to hip surgery. Carpenter should get the first opportunity at replacing him as the fourth-line center in Calgary. Carpenter has a good chance to be a regular contributor after bouncing in and out of the Flames’ lineup, and with free agency coming, that’s a desirable (though more pressure-packed) position to be in.

1617223584_365_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Previously ranked at 9 points, with a percentage of 0.686. Next seven days: against. MTL (Apr. 9), vs. BUF (Apr. 7), vs. DAL (Apr. 7) (Apr. 12)

Jack Campbell is a player that is under a lot of strain. Campbell’s rib injury came at an inopportune moment, as he was in the midst of a contract year and a string of poor individual performances. Well, the Maple Leafs’ All-Star goaltender is back in the net, just as Petr Mrazek was sidelined for the season with a groin injury. Campbell looked great in his first two games back this week; will he be able to maintain that level of play in a full April schedule? The stakes are high.

Previously ranked at #7, with a percentage of 0.674. Next seven days: at WSH (April 6), vs. BOS (April 8), vs. BUF (April 10) and At DAL (April 11). (Apr. 12)

Ondrej Palat is the player who is under pressure. The Lightning and Palat had a rough month in March. In 18 games, the upcoming UFA only had four assists, as Tampa Bay went on a four-game losing streak. The Lightning’s team game has improved, but Palat must contribute more. When the playoffs come, Tampa Bay understands better than most that it’s all hands on deck.

1617223580_595_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Previously ranked at 8 points, with a percentage of 0.659. Next seven days: against. EDM (Apr. 8), vs. STL (Apr. 10), vs. LA (Apr. 11). (Apr. 12)

Cam Talbot is the player who is under pressure. The pressure of competition is something that everyone enjoys. Especially when you’re part of a winning squad (like the Wild are). Marc-Andre Fleury has arrived in Minnesota with the Minnesota Wild. It can (and should) add some juice to Talbot. Fleury’s presence adds to his desire to be on top of his game, since he has been the Wild’s starter for the most of the season. So far, everything seems to be functioning well.

1617223588_525_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

10 Points Percentage: 0.664 Previous ranking: 10 Points Percentage: 0.664 Next seven days: against. STL (Apr. 8), At TB (Apr. 10), @ WSH (Apr. 11). (Apr. 12)

Jeremy Swayman is a player who is under pressure. Swayman has had a fantastic season thus far, but he has struck a difficult patch. The rookie goalkeeper’s performance was unsatisfactory. In March, he had an 893 save percentage and a 3.10 goals-against average. Everyone’s calendar is jam-packed in April, and the Atlantic Division playoff seeding fight is heating up. Swayman will have a significant impact on Boston’s final destination.

1617223593_47_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Previous position: 5 points, 0.676 percentile The following games are scheduled for the next seven days: against. PIT (April 7), vs. OTT (April 9), and vs. CAR (Apr. 12)

Andrew Copp is the player who is under pressure. In New York, Copp is under a lot of strain. He was acquired by the Rangers to be that missing piece, a game-changing difference-maker. Copp has a limited amount of time to develop chemistry with Artemi Panarin and other prospective linemates before the playoffs. From now until then, Copp will have to put up his best effort in every game.

1617223587_984_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Previous position: 15 points, 0.613 percentile Next seven days: at LA (7 p.m.), vs. COL (9 p.m.), At MIN (10 p.m.) (Apr. 12)

Mikko Koskinen is a player who is under pressure. Koskinen, unlike his goalkeeper partner Mike Smith, isn’t contracted beyond this season. His future will be determined by how he plays down the stretch, both individually and in helping Edmonton reach the playoffs. However, Koskinen’s last four numbers haven’t been great: 2-1-0 with a.884 save percentage and a 3.74 GAA. That will not suffice.

Jordan Binnington is a player that is under pressure. What went wrong with Binnington? Ville Husso replaced Binnington as the Blues’ starting goaltender, which is logical considering Binnington’s previous performance, which ended in four goals on 13 shots. Binnington’s six-year, $36 million deal is just in its first season. There’s a lot of demand here to provide some kind of return on investment.

1617223583_644_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Previously ranked at 6 points, with a percentage of 0.648. The following games are scheduled for the next seven days: At NYR (April 7), vs. WSH (April 9), vs. NSH (April 10) and @ NYI (April 11). (Apr. 12)

Kasperi Kapanen is a player that is under pressure. Kapanen has two goals and six points in six games since Jan. 25. Even without the extra weight of a contract year, that’s not good. When the season began, Kapanen had so much talent and promise. He has to prove it again in the following month (and beyond).

1617223596_209_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Previously ranked at 13 points, with a percentage of 0.597. The following games are scheduled for the next seven days: vs. EDM (Apr. 7), At MIN (Apr. 10), and @ CHI (Apr. 11). (Apr. 12)

Adrian Kempe is a player that is under pressure. In the Pacific Division race, the Kings are (surprisingly?) well positioned. It’s past time for Kempe to get in on the action. Kempe has had one non-empty-net goal in 17 games before to Saturday’s game in Winnipeg. That hit-or-miss output isn’t the intended feel for one of L.A.’s offensive studs, especially with another perhaps miraculous playoff run on the horizon.

Waiver-watch

Previously ranked at 17 points, with a percentage of 0.578. The following games are scheduled for the next seven days: vs. VAN (April 6), vs. ARI (April 9), and At VAN (Apr. 12)

Jack Eichel is the player that is under pressure. The situation in Vegas is tight, as the team faces an uphill struggle to reach the playoffs. The likes of Mark Stone and Max Pacioretty, among others, are still unavailable. The Golden Knights acquired Jack Eichel for a specific reason: to elevate their level of play. And Eichel is the most renowned current player in the league who has never played in the playoffs. Eichel finding a new gear benefits both sides.

1617223579_849_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Previously ranked: 12 pts., 0.609 pts., 0.609 pts. against. TB (Apr. 6), At PIT (Apr. 9), vs. BOS (Apr. 10), vs. PHI (Apr. 11). (Apr. 12)

Vitek Vanecek is a player that is under pressure. We all know Washington will reach the playoffs, but Vanecek will play a big part in how comfortably they get there. He just let up four goals on 13 shots against Minnesota and hasn’t been that impressive recently. Ilya Samsonov, the backup, isn’t rushing in to take over. The next month is critical for Vanecek to demonstrate his consistency and help the Capitals get back on track.

Previous position: 16 points, 0.601 percentile vs. TOR (Apr. 7), against. NJ (Apr. 9), At CHI (Apr. 10), vs. TB (Apr. 11). (Apr. 12)

Denis Gurianov is a player who is under pressure. Gurianov is required in Dallas. The Stars have scored the fewest 5-on-5 goals of any club in the postseason race this season. Gurianov has done well there, now ranking sixth on the squad in 5-on-5 points (23). Plus, all seven of Gurianov’s points in his last 15 games have come at even strength. Gurianov’s recent disappointing performance is the problem (and healthy scratch). Will it stoke his interest?

1617223591_595_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Previously ranked at 14 points, with a percentage of 0.609 The following games are scheduled for the next seven days: At OTT (April 7), vs. FLA (April 9), @ PIT (April 10), and against. SJ (Apr. 12)

Mattias Ekholm is the player who is under pressure. Nashville’s defense needs some assistance from Roman Josi. It’s crucial to the Predators’ playoff chances. Nashville has been in the top ten in goals against and the top five in shots against since mid-March. Their blue line has been ravaged by injuries, and those who are still standing, like as veteran Ekholm, are under pressure to weather the storm before Nashville sinks.

Power-rankings-best

Previously ranked at 18 points, with a percentage of 0.529. Next seven days: against. SJ (Apr. 9), vs. VGK (Apr. 6), vs. ARI (Apr. 7), vs. VGK (Apr. 8). (Apr. 12)

Brock Boeser is the player who is under pressure. Boeser is no longer on the will-he-or-won’t-he-be-traded merry-go-round. Now everyone is waiting to see what Boeser’s next deal will be. How much trust can the upcoming RFA instill in Vancouver’s management until April, allowing both parties to negotiate in good faith? Boeser must be worried about what’s going to happen.

1617223585_545_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Previously ranked at 22 points, with a percentage of 0.529. Next seven days: vs. PIT (Apr. 8), At CAR (Apr. 9), @ STL (Apr. 10). (Apr. 12)

Mathew Barzal is a player that is under a lot of strain. As Barzal himself indicated last week, the Islanders are under pressure to end the season on a high note. New York has had a dismal season, but Barzal believes that playing playoff-caliber hockey down the stretch will show that his team is working toward a Stanley Cup run. Now, in April, Barzal can put on a display of his own attacking prowess.

1617223586_668_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Previous position: 19th percentile: 0.543 against. DET (Apr. 6), vs. COL (Apr. 8), At OTT (Apr. 10), @ MTL (Apr. 11). (Apr. 11)

Pierre-Luc Dubois is a player that is under pressure. Dubois’ output has dropped recently (he has one goal and four points since mid-March), and he isn’t looking to conclude the regular season on a high note. When Dubois becomes an RFA this summer, he’ll have to negotiate yet another deal. The organizational path Winnipeg is taking seems to be hazy. Dubois should take advantage of the coming month to show off his attacking skills once again. But there’s no need to feel rushed, right?

Jack Roslovic is a player that is under pressure. Roslovic is a pending RFA, but that’s not the only reason. It’s the fact that the Blue Jackets aren’t going to reach the playoffs (again), and some changes are expected. What impact will this have on the local product? Since March 10, Roslovic has only scored two goals and is prone to defensive errors. Roslovic can help put himself up for his future chapter by being a consistent, positive player in the remaining games of Columbus’ season. Now is the time to seize the opportunity.

1617223605_493_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Previously ranked: 20 points, 0.479 percentile The following games are scheduled for the next seven days: against. CGY (April 6), At PHI (April 9), @ CAR (April 10), and @ FLA (April 11). (Apr. 12)

Trevor Zegras is a player who is under pressure. Anaheim is no longer in contention for the playoffs. So it’s up to Zegras to keep having fun and pulling off those highlight-reel maneuvers as only he can. Regardless of the Ducks’ position, Zegras is a strong contender for the Calder Trophy. It will be crucial to keep his spirits up the rest of the way.

1617223601_496_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Previously ranked at 21 points with a percentage of 0.486. The following games are scheduled for the next seven days: against. CGY (April 7), At VAN (April 9), and @ NSH (Apr. 12)

Tomas Hertl is the player who is under pressure. You’re correct; Hertl has already signed his eight-year contract extension. Isn’t there any more pressure there? Here’s the thing: Hertl has become the face of the organization, and San Jose will once again miss the playoffs. Hertl must take the lead in demonstrating to Sharks supporters that there is hope at the end of the tunnel, that talented players are ready to lead San Jose back to prominence in the Western Conference. The procedure begins right now.

1617223595_467_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Previously ranked at 29 points with a percentage of 0.421. The following games are scheduled for the next seven days: against. SEA (April 7), vs. DAL (April 10), and vs. LA (Apr. 12)

Dylan Strome is the player who is under pressure. Strome has put in a lot of effort to improve his season. The upcoming RFA will profit from achieving top-line status this summer (especially with arbitration rights). Strome’s main aim right now is to make the most of a chance with Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat over the next 12 games to put himself in the greatest negotiation position possible.

1617223589_785_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Previously ranked at 30 points, with a percentage of 0.350. Next seven days: against. WPG (Apr. 7), At NJ (Apr. 9), @ TOR (Apr. 10). (Apr. 11)

Jeff Petry is a player that is under a lot of pressure. Kent Hughes, the Canadiens’ general manager, didn’t move Petry in March, but he hasn’t ruled out doing so this summer. So, from now until the end of April, every game is an open audition for clubs interested in his services. Now is the time to put your best foot forward.

Previous position: 25 points, 0.450 percentile Next seven days: against. CBJ (Apr. 9), vs. OTT (Apr. 6), vs. WPG (Apr. 6). (Apr. 12)

Moritz Seider is the player who is under pressure. This season, Seider has been the Calder Trophy’s loser. It’s now crunch time. Although the Red Wings’ top defender has been outstanding, Zegras and Toronto’s Michael Bunting have pushed their way into contention. Although the Red Wings will not reach the playoffs, Seider may utilize his last games to solidify his Rookie of the Year claim.

1617223594_215_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Previous position: 26 points, with a percentage of 0.393. Next seven days: against. ANA (Apr. 9), @ CBJ (Apr. 7), @ WSH (Apr. 9) (Apr. 12)

Ivan Provorov is a player who is under pressure. Provorov was the one who did it to himself. The Flyers’ defensemen has attracted a growing amount of favorable attention, prompting a request for “more, please.” Provorov’s secret to success is consistency, and although Philadelphia’s season is over, there’s still time for him to flourish in April. It would be the ideal lead-up to whatever the Flyers’ management has in store for the team’s resurgence next season.

1617223602_569_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Previous position: 27 points, with a percentage of 0.386. The following games are scheduled for the next seven days: vs. MTL (April 7), At DAL (April 9), and @ ARI (Apr. 12)

Damon Severson is the player who is under pressure. Severson should be in the peak of his career at this point. He’s 27 years old and a key member of the Devils’ blue line. However, as his minus-four performance in New Jersey’s squandered four-goal lead (and subsequent defeat) against Florida last week shown, Severson still has work to do. The defender has been re-signed for another season, but he can prove his worth by putting up (much) better numbers as the Devils near the finish of their season.

1617223606_90_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Previously ranked: 24 points, 0.444 percentile The following games are scheduled for the next seven days: April 7 at CAR, April 8 at FLA, April 10 at TB, and April 11 at TOR (Apr. 12)

Colin Miller is the player who is under pressure. At the trade deadline, there were no takers for Miller. The 29-year-old is still a potential UFA with an unknown future ahead of him. Will he be able to fit in with the Sabres’ crop of up-and-comers? Is it still possible for him to carve himself a place in the league that is worth his present pay ($3.875 million per year)? If Miller feels he can, the best place to do it this month is on the ice.

Jakob Chychrun is a player who is under pressure. Although Chychrun is technically not a free agent, it seems that he will be moved this summer. On the ice, Chychrun has had a rough season and is dealing with health difficulties. What impact will this have on possible trading partners? His best plan of action is to perform well in April. But don’t put any strain on yourself.

Chris Tierney is a player that is under pressure. Tierney has been a healthy scratch for one of the weakest clubs in the league recently. He’s also a 27-year-old unrestricted free agent. That’s not a good combo. How can Tierney handle the strain of regaining a regular role with the Senators while also demonstrating his worth for the next contract?

NHL-2021-22-schedule-release-Most-intriguing-games-Seattle-Kraken

Previously ranked at 32 points, with a percentage of 0.362. Next seven days: @ STL (Apr. 6), @ CHI (Apr. 7), vs. CGY (Apr. 9), @ CGY (Apr. 10), @ CGY (Apr. 11), @ CGY (Apr. 12), @ CGY (Apr. 13), @ CGY (Apr. (Apr. 12)

Philipp Grubauer is a player that is under pressure. Grubauer must finish the season stronger than he began. The highs and lows he’s experienced are widely chronicled. He’s signed a long-term contract with the Kraken, and a successful end to the season would be beneficial to both him and the club. That would give everyone confidence in the team’s netminding for the remainder of the season and beyond.
