Once upon a time, the New York Yankees were truly interested in winning World Series championships. It had nothing to do with luxury thresholds or tricky situations. It was about Derek Jeter’s big single, Mariano Rivera’s shutouts, and the Core Four (plus Bernie Williams) spearheading baseball’s final real dynasty.
In the Bronx, things have certainly changed.
Despite having one of the greatest payrolls in baseball, the Yankees will start the 2022 season without winning a World Series since 2009. In 2014, Jeter played his farewell game, striking out in his final at-bat against the rival Boston Red Sox.
On the eve of the Yankees’ 2022 season, it seems like the right moment to reflect on Jeter’s best years with the team. We considered statistics, the team’s ultimate result, and the circumstances surrounding the seasons in question while compiling this list.
Based on the aforementioned criteria, the following are Jeter’s most memorable campaigns:
Rookie of the Year gets an honorable mention (1996)
After hitting.250 with seven RBI in 15 games in 1995, Jeter seemed to be on his way to Triple-A for the 1996 season. Due to an injury to starter shortstop Tony Fernandez prior of Opening Day, new manager Joe Torre turned to Jeter, who is less than three months shy of turning 22.

For most of the 2006 season, it seemed like the MVP race would be between Jeter (.343 average, 214 hits, 14 home runs, 97 RBI, 34 stolen bases, and 5.6 WAR) and Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz (.343 average, 214 hits, 14 home runs, 97 RBI, 34 stolen bases, and 5.6 WAR) (.287 average, an American League-high 54 home runs and 137 RBI, and 5.8 WAR).
Instead, the award went to Justin Morneau of the Minnesota Twins, who hit.321 with 34 home runs, 130 RBI, and 4.3 WAR.

In the ALDS, he hit.444 to help the Yankees come back from a 2-0 series hole to beat the Oakland Athletics.
However, there are two key instances that stand out above all others. There was The Flip first.
Then came November 1st, in the wee hours of the morning. The Yankees were behind 3-1 in the eighth inning and risked losing the World Series, ironically, 3-1. In the ninth inning, veteran first baseman Tino Martinez, who was then in the last days of his first stay with the Yankees, hit a game-tying home ball to right-center field. Jeter hit a home run over the short-field porch an inning later, only minutes after the series made history by having a game played in November.
Yankees radio announcer Michael Kay dubbed Jeter “Mr. November” almost thirty-four years after Reggie Jackson was dubbed “Mr. October.” As the legendary shortstop rounded the bases and gave the Bronx Bombers fresh energy, Yankee Stadium rocked.
